Here are some tips for buying jewelry with a patina–and enjoying it for years to come!
Jewelry with an oxidized (blackened) patina (finish) is very popular these days. Why so popular? The darkened patinas bring out the beauty of special textures, like the Signature Collection clover pattern on this work, Sugar Moonbeams pendant. Patinas also convey a suggestion of the ancient and thus connect us with our history and traditions.
Tip: Jewelry with Patina Has Added Depth and Visual Interest
Oxidation makes visible the contours and patterns on metal surfaces that would otherwise be difficult to see. This is because “fresh” metals such as silver are naturally bright and reflective which makes surface textures wash out. So patinas help to highlight an interesting pattern or texture.
You might call it “selective tarnish.”
Since silver naturally darkens over time, oxidized patinas emphasize the element of time and convey a sense of the ancient. A patina thus helps to connect us with our sense of history and traditions on timeless pieces such as this Hidden Heart II garnet pendant.
Tip: Jewelry Patinas Allow Contrast Between Metals
Silver readily accepts an oxidation patina and turns dark but gold does not. Gold resists the patina. These properties of the two metals can be harnessed artistically for a striking effect in jewelry. Gold accents are highlighted when placed on silver that is oxidized, such as on this minimalist yet bold pendant Grit Gold Medal Dog Tag.
Tip: How To Maintain Your Jewelry With Patina
Can we keep patinas dark? That depends—It helps to understand how those patinas get on to the piece—and how they come off.
Patinas are a surface treatment. They are not permanent, and they can be worn away by use or even polished away. That is why we always recommend Never to use silver polish and cleaners on jewelry that has a patina, as that will dissolve the patina quite effectively. (This is what you are doing when you clean your sterling silver flatware.)
Instead of polish simply use a soft cloth and mild soap if necessary to clean your oxidized jewelry. No need for a toothbrush or any abrasive material, including silver polish cloths.
Tip: Your Jewelry Patina Can Be Restored
Another beauty of your real jewelry from Donna Weaver Design is that the piece is not ruined even if the patina rubs off. Underneath the surface patina is solid precious metal, not plated or filled. Solid silver in its natural state is simply whiter and shinier without patina. Gradual fading of patina is inevitable with wear and this usually results in a piece with a very natural and individualized look.
Finally, it is nice to know that patinas can be refreshed and renewed if desired. Contact us for more information if you would like to explore having your Donna Weaver Design jewelry patina refreshed.
With these tips, you can feel confident when buying jewelry with patinas.
